How to Embrace Hygge at Home

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

It can sometimes be hard for our bodies and minds to adjust away from summer living. As the weather begins to chill, embracing the Scandinavian concept of hygge can help your spirit feel a little lighter and your home a little cozier.

What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced “HOO-gah”) is a Danish word that roughly translates to “to give courage, comfort, joy” in English, although it’s typically defined as the creation of a warm atmosphere to enjoy the good things in life with good people. While hygge can be practiced year-round, Autumn and Winter are the most associated times of the year.

Soft Lighting

Large, overhead lights can make a space feel washed out. Instead, try placing smaller lights with warmer hues in different areas to better control the ambiance. If you have a fireplace or wood stove, use it! Although it may seem like you have to wait for the weather to be at its coldest, having a fire can inspire a lot of senses and provide a mindful and nostalgic atmosphere.

Think in Textures

The ultimate comfort looks different for everyone. If you’re having trouble bringing hygge into your home, try to think of textures in your spaces. It could be as simple as switching your warm weather bed linens to Autumn and Winter blankets and comforters. Reflect on what textures you gravitate towards when seeking comfort. Do you have a favorite hoodie or blanket when watching movies? Are you a fuzzy sock fan? As you make your cozy spaces, try to incorporate that feeling of physical ease.

Nesting Nooks

Having a nest or special area in your home to enjoy hobbies during the colder seasons can help you feel more connected to yourself and your interests. Try to keep your nesting space distraction-free. It can be easy to get wrapped up in things you “should” be doing that you begin to harbor guilt for relaxing or not being productive. Building a secret room can help you keep your serene peace.

Not Just Solitary

Scandinavian winters are long, dark, and cold. Like some places in the United States, the winter evenings begin to settle in at 4:00 pm in Denmark. Embracing time with loved ones and friends is essential to maintain the warm, fuzziness of hygge. Hosting a board game night or a potluck with loved ones combines multiple elements of the sentiment: indulging in food and drink, quality time with loved ones, and mindful moments of enjoying the simple pleasures.
